The city was founded in 1471 by the Sheriffs Abu Yumas and Alami Moulay Rachid Ben Ali in an inaccessible mountainous enclave overlooking the route between Tetuán-Fez. Their objective was to stem the flow and influence of the Europeans who dominated the coast. They built a fortified castle, where they set up their followers with a few dozen families from Granada. They extended their influence throughout northern Morocco, while maintaining good relations with the Nazari kingdom of Granada.
